The R107 is a boat compared to the R129 in terms of ride and handling - they don't even come close in performance either (500s). The only reason to buy one would be if you loved the looks and extra tlc required to keep in top shape - they all leak and they all rust at some point!
With regard to the I6 / V8 - the V8s have double-throw timing chains and MB have a history of failing tensioners - the sixes appear to be weaker here.
