Auto gearshift illumination - how do I get to the (dead) bulb

HI, This is my first post and I'm sorry that it's such a simple one but it's been bugging me since I had my 1988 107 300SL (RHD - UK model) last spring. I've used the forum loads and found answers to almost all of my problems EXCEPT this one! :.

My 300SL is on great condition and all prety well original, plus it goes like stink but the auto gearshift illumination (I assume it's a bulb) isn't working and I can't find an easy way of getting to it. I don't want to damage the centre console/wiring/fittings/trim by getting it out wrongly so any help would be much appreciated. (Especially my wife who "Needs to See" what gear she's in!)
  • I've checked all the fuses (including re-seating the fuses and cleaning the contacts)

All the other devices on the centre consol work OK (mirror adjuster, e/window switches, Cigar lighter etc)

All of the other panel back-light illumination is OK.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Cheers

In order to remove the wood console you must:

First remove ashtray

Remove ashtray frame

There will be two screws at the top of the wood console, remove them

Then pull out the console towards the back of the car, ***do not pull it up*** there's one pen that slides into the center console and must be removed by sliding it out

Also:

1. Don't scratch the wood with the ashtray frame. It's a tight fit.

2. Do not overly tighten the hold-down screws for the console, doing this will promote cracking of the veneer.

There is a video which shows how to remove the console here.

www.mbca.org/northtexas

It is a special Euro bulb which you can order from Fastlane or get at the dealer. Not cheap. Get spares for the dash instuments while you are at it.

thanks for the information

Thanks all for the info guys. I'll have a go later today -
and thanks for the video info Tecqboy, however all the videos are for 129 models not 107's, does anyone know of any repair videos on 107's - it's so much easier watching than reading how to do things.
Cheers
Jim

job done (apart from a blown window lifter fuse!)

To all assisters
Thanks - got the console out OK ( apart from blowing a window lifter fuse prising the window switch connectors apart)
Fuse and bulb replaced and hey presto - all working
I found It easier to slide the console panel out after pulling the door mirror switch out first.

Thanks Again
