Ash tray will not pivot correctly

On a 1989 560SL, the ash tray will not pivot correctly when it is opened. It acts like there is nothing at the bottom to pivot around, and wants to pull straight out. In addition, it will not always close all the way.

The ash tray has a spring clip at the top and none on the bottom. The recepticle for the tray has a small tin plate riveted where it should pivot with a very short lip sticking up at the center. There is nothing at the bottom of the tray that would catch this lip and cause it to pivot, and looks like there is nothing missing.

Anybody have any idea what the problem is or if I am missing something?

You don't have it in correctly. You really have to angle it and catch it at the bottom, and THEN close it. After putting the E-brake on, you might even have to put it in reverse if you have an aftermarket shifter.

Thanks for the advice Strife. I'll give it another shot and see what happens.
