Looking at a 1983 380 SL
A friend is thinking about buying this car. He says that everything works. I said, "Everything?" He said, "Well, that's what the owner claims." My friend hasn't driven it yet.
He's a pretty good mechanic, has had VW's since the 1960's when we were uh, less settled. Now has two Kahrman Gia's he's working on. One is completely restored and the other is not. I mention this because he is not unhandy with tools and enjoys working on cars. It is a 1983 380SL WITH 130,000 MILES. Asking $5,900.00 Thanks for your help and comments. Bot PS I read that loooong thread by some bozo who bought a 380 and whined for at least 2 years to you guys. I wont let that happen with this deal! |

380sl
I had looked at a 81 380SL with 160K because my mechanic who has worked on Mercedses all his life told me that the 380s had problems with the top end of the motor...I ended up buying a 300CE coupe instead. I would wait to see what others who may own the car have to say with their experiences. Good luck.

If your friend has plenty of experience with VW's, this car should be a breeze! I'm actually quite pleased at how easy my 450SL is to work on.
One final note -- two words of wisdom: Timing Chain.
