If your high mount brake lite fails,,
Check the wire where it goes into the deck lid right above the hinge. Was told the other day that my center brake light wasn't working. I thought I would have gotten a "bulb out" light, but didn't. Took the light assembly out and put twelve volts to it and all the lights lit. Checked for power at the plug and nothing. Checked for power at the wire as it starts up the hinge and had power. Wires were completely broken off at the end of the hinge where it enters the deck lid. Car only has 47 K on it and I was a bit surprised, but I do use the trunk a lot more than our other cars. Just some info to check your light, and if it's not working, this is a very probable cause.

Pete. You are correct about the 3rd brake light. In the manual it states that there will be no fault shown if that light fails. In other words, no idiot light will illuminate.
I had the same trouble as you, and being an electrician I found the wire broken in the same spot as you mentioned. Good work. |

Me too
Seems the wiring harness flexes at this point every time the trunk is opened and eventually breaks wires. Easy splice job.

We bought our SL600 with that problem. One of the very few problems she had when we bought her. We haggled it down almost a grand with that one...
Easily fixed, took a whole 15 minutes to replace the wire with something that has a little bit better insulation.

I fixed my third brake light today. The wire was broken at the same place. Here's some additional information. To make the top splices pull the slack from the trunk hood (you can push it back after you make the splice). To make the bottom splices pull the slack from below the trunk hinge (again, you can push the wire back after you make the splice). At both far ends cut the insulation and wire; run new thicker gauge wire; leave enough slack to lay the new wire comfortably; make splices at both ends and re-install insulation and cover. Now you will have a thicker wire run form the trunk hood down through the hinge, and the wire shouldn’t break again. Last edited by Red SL; 06-29-2006 at 03:31 PM. |
