Will Sadie Ever Run Again
All this for the center flap diaphragm. Whats really killing me is the dashboard needs to be replaced $2000.00 MB or $850 +4 months recoverd. And I'm just going to put it back on with a cheap $90 coverlay.

She will run again. She just will not be herself. I would try to call wrecking yards around your home to see if any of them have the correct dashboard that you need. you may just get lucky. You are also too deeply in lovwe with her to stop now. Just press on soldier, the end will be insight.
If not, I know of a beautiful 1998 SL500 for sale here locally. It is black on black, and in immaculate shape. 1 owner, with only 49,000 miles.

Unfortunatly the boneyards arround here only know how to use a torch to get things out and would never have the patience to pull one carefully enough.
But the real reason I cant get the new dashboard it that I currently have another 560SL and a SL600 lined up to buy. A new dash would definately push me into divorce court. At the end of this bout of work the car will be nearly 100% mechanically restored. I will still need to renew the clutches in the positraction, fix the cruise control and replace or repair the fuel tank sensor. Then I will start focusing on the cosmetics. The car should be up on the road next week, but he dash will have to wait until next year. And then I will do it again. John Roncallo |

It's not supposed to be installed with 2ways tape. That wy
Adhesive silicone is what should be used. Works and looks great on mine! |

Good Stuff!
Hi John,
I admire the way you just got in there and FIXED that center flap diaghram! Most of us would complain about it for at least 3 - 4 years before selling the car... I've been thinking about pulling the dash on my '79 to replace a couple diaghrams. Was it hard?? Was it messy?? Are you having fun yet??

Make sure you learn some new good four letter words before putting it back together. |

Hmmm..the vacuum bag idea is interesting, veneer is put on this way also. I don't know if the dash is strong enough. But the two-sided tape thing is supposedly because the coefficient of expansion for the ABS(?) plastic of the cover, the (whatever) over the dash, and the metal underneath are all different. I've read that those who glue wind up with bad warping problems. I would try lots of very small pieces of two-sided tape before doing anything drastic. I've been thinking about putting a cover on my dash BEFORE it cracks!
I've seen one of these put on very well, I'm very picky, and it looked good to me. Especially $1000+ in my pocket good. On the subject of actually buying a "new" dash, how old do you think the "new" dash is, and how long has it been sitting in a hot/cold warehouse?

The new dashboard are available from Germany. If Germany is following US bussines practices (like "Just in Time", what what ends up where I work as "a little bit late") and gets taxed on there inventory like in the US, its most likely that the dashboards delivered today have not been on the shelf more than 6 months. Now if you find one thats been laying arround a dealer because they ordered the wrong color for someone, then I would sat it could be 15 years old. In any case I'm not worried about hot/cold as I am worried about extream greanhouse effect heat or UV, both of which wont happen in a box in a warehouse. John Roncallo |

There were two here locally. The first was at a Dodge dealer (believe it or not), and they were asking 26k for a 1998 SL500 with white exterior, grey interior. Fully loaded, including pano roof, but had a slight shimmy at idle. Also had needed the front lip repainted (mine does too, but I can live with it). Oh yes, it has xenons, orthopedic seats, heated seats, 6 disc changer, bug shield, and last but not least, AMG rims. Nice car, but just didn't feel like it "fit like a glove." It may be the right one for you, I will see if they still have it.
The other one sold already, sorry...
