There are other posts on this, but don't go crazy trying to get every single speck of the old pad off. Just get off the loose, lumpy pieces - vigorously rub them off with a towel. Don't scrape with anything (aluminum hood). It would be a good idea to cover the entire engine compartment and fenders with a sheet first. If the old pad has been missing for a while it would be a good idea to clean off oil, grease, etc with engine cleaner and a rag (again, watch dropping anything on the engine compartment or fenders, cover everything).

Use the 3M "hi temp" adhesive ONLY, and test fit the piece first (it is easy and you don't have to take the hood off). Marking the centerpoint of the front and back of the hood and pad will help. Follow the instructions on the can exactly, and wait for the proper outside temperature. It's important to apply the adhesive and WAIT A BIT before actually attaching the hood pad.

Don't forget about the other hood pad behind the larger one!

Thanks sounds easy, I ordered the two pads, where can I get the adhesive - any auto parts store? Thanks for the advice.

hood pad application

I agree that you should be careful taking the old one off and, yes, do cover the engine with a sheet or drop cloth. Also, I used a plastic palette knife to get as much of the old stuff off as possible. Make sure the new one fits prior to applying adhesive...I had to make some minor cuts to the pad on my 300CE Coupe. I purchased the 3M spray adhesive at Home Depot as I could not find it at my local auto parts store. Apply to both sides...set it set and then mate to the hood. Hope this helps

Re small hood pad.

Can the 'small' hood pad be ordered seperately? if so, from where? my local MB dealer parts guy informs me he cannot see it listed seperately.

I found both pads at http://www.performanceproducts4benz.com, just go to your model then type hood pad in the search both large and small come up. You can buy each individually. It cost me about $115 with shipping. I looked at several sites before finding this one.

I found removing the hood ,on my W126 , to be the path of least resistance. I flipped it onto a large foam rubber pad, on the grass, for a soft working surface. No risk of getting any goobers on the car. Also, I was not comfortable spraying the new adhesive anywhere near the car. 3M has a cleaner" General Purpose Adhesive Remover" part # 8984, that is excellent. 3M part # 8090 is the HD spray adhesive to use. Do not use part # 8089.

I use Mercedes Benz "Special Adhesive" PN A 000 989 92 71. It comes in a brush on can and is designed just for this job. It is available at any MB dealer and probably also at Fast Lane, Call Phil. You will need 2 cans if your doing the front pad and rear "seal". Reed the directions on the can.

It makes a noticeable, but not astronomic difference. It also seems to help paint longevity - those engines get hot and bake the hood paint.

.

I took my hood off. Requires 3 people but only takes a few carefull minuts. It will save you time and agrevation in the end. Just be carefull when you put it back on. You have to carefully check each aft corner and the edges and grill for alignment as you SLOOOOOOWLY close it the first time and each time you make adjustments. Lay it on a table covered by microfiber of cotton towels. Use a plastic disposable scaper. (Home Depot Paint Department).

BOTH pads made a difference to me; I'd be a lot more worried about baking the paint than the noise. This is a very easy fix/improvement to make and a heck of a lot cheaper than repainting the hood.

my hood already has "issues"...minor hail damage and the finish is peeling behind the grille, exposing oxidized aluminum. The whole car would benefit from a repaint anyway.

For those who posted advice about the hood pad - thank you! The pad is on and very nice. The yellow 3M spray adhesive was easy to work with and made the job a quick fix. I did take the hood off which I'm sure made the job a lot easier than on the car.

If you don't take your hood off - cover your windshield to protect it from over-spray. With the right conditions air will channel through the bottom of hood and over windshield. Don't ask why I know this
