I fixed my clock!
I found this great link http://www.diymbrepair.com/ on oursl.com. It took about an hour, and I was ah tick tocken, music to my ears.
The local VDO shop wanted $110  , it cost me 3 bucks

Eric, thanks for the great tip. My clock just conked and the tach/clock assembly is over $400.
By the way, mine is also an '83 500SL. Have you ever replaced your shocks? What did you put on and where did you get them?

Yes, it was a while back I went with Bilstein Shocks, got them from Star parts 323.463.8888. Also if I had to do it over again, I would go with the heavy duty Bilsteins, much less body roll.
