Clunking Noises

Anyone have any ideas on why my 98 SL 500 makes so many clunking sounds? They come from the front end, back end and sometimes seems like right under the seats. I've had it looked at by one dealer and 2 independent garages. Everyone says it is a very clunky car but they can not find anything causing the noise. Any ideas? Thanks.

Mines not 'clunky' or noisy in any way apart from a little squeak from what sounds like the exhaust and I can only hear it in the summer!?

Generally, mine isn't clunky either.

However, I once had a knocking, clunky noise coming from the front suspension which could be felt in the wheel when cornering over rough roads. I changed the ant-roll bar (sway bar) bushes. Cost about GBP10. Cured the problem. What's your mileage? It may be that some of the rubber is starting to go.

No clunking noises here other... And I have the heavy V12.

Mine does creak when going over bumps unevenly. That is normal though, just flex in the frame, as there is no roof.

My 92 500 SL clunked on occasion. It was coming from the rear. It turned out to be rear control arm bushings. All is quiet now.

clunking

Thanks guys for the input. My SL has just under 69000 miles on it. Will have the shop focus on those areas. I had my wife drive it slowly down the street while I cruised beside her. Every little bump in the road made it sound like the car was going to lose something in the road. It is getting worse. Will let you know if your suggestions work. Thanks again.

I agree with the others about the anti-sway bar bushings, but I'd also have a look at the shocks. If they are originals, it may be time for new ones. Rubber parts get hard with age so any rubber bushings in the suspension are suspect. Also consider sub frame mounts, but your car is a bit young for that. Disc brake caliper springs and pins can wear and cause caliper klunk or rattle. My 1991 SL does not klunk. These cars are not klunkers and don't let anyone tell you differently.

clunks

Have had similar clunks from both my 350slc, and some years ago, one of my 190e's. After many visits to garages with 190, and huge expense replacing shocks, roll-bar bushes, tyres, balljoints, you name it (most of which were perfect), turns out it was the engine mounts worn.

Gave the effect of noises all over the underside, due to sound and vibration traveling along the chassis.

Give it a try

Gerry
