1981 380sl 107
Greetings,
I am trying to figure out what folks are getting for gas mileage on these vehicles? I have done a full tune up, new tires, changed all fluid, filters, spark plugs and wires. What kind of mileage should I be getting intown and highway? What are you guys getting? |

Logically one would do better gas milage with top on and windows closed.
I have not really calculated what kind of gas millage I get with my 560sl but I have noticed significant differences when I am heavy on the pedal... |

I get 15 mpg in my 450SL, which is fairly normal. You should not expect much more than this. These cars were not built with fuel economy in mind...

Nobby is being ironic. You'll get used to him. He gets poor fuel economy, just like the rest of us.
Anyway, where he lives, he's supposed to be figuring it in L/100km.

better with 6
Hi
I had a similar query so when I had to go to London very early last week (5am start) I thought I'd do a check on MPG on the standard UK "95 octane 'Premium' grade unleaded petrol". I did the 240mile round trip (mainly motorways - for those in the UK M1 - A43 - M40 -M25 plus a few minor local roads ) avaraging about 68mph (max about 85mph) in my 88 300SL (6 cylinder, 3 litre, done 100+k miles) with the soft top on and windows closed. I used just under £44 of fuel @ 94.9p/litre (I had to fill up at the begining and did the same at the end in order to work out the consumption) this works out about 23MPG which I felt was about normal when cruising - with the foot down and the "economy gauge" in the red on winding roads (without speed cameras) I drop to less than 15MPG. I normaly feel that I average about 18MPG normal mixed motoring The engine is set up for good emission and runs well but there is a slight vibration in the rear wheels at 70 mph (going to the workshop later in the week) which will lower the MPG a bit. Hope this helps Cheers Jim

Is that per Imperial gallon (160 oz.) or US gallon (128 oz.)?

petrol
Hi
Sorry I forget sometimes that we're two countries divided by the same language (and measurements) I meant Imperial Gallons, although it's sold in Litres nowadays, everyone still talks about Miles per Gallon (Imp.) in the UK (For info that is : 4.54 litres or 4 quarts or 8 pints or 160 fluid ounces) Cheers Jim

Hi there,
I have an '82 380SL that has a 560SL engine installed, and I drove from Vancouver, WA to Seattle, WA and back last week. Fairly flat road, around 80mph most of the way. I drove some city driving in Seattle, maybe 16 miles or so. Total miles traveled was 317, mpg was 19.2. I think that's pretty good mileage for the car. On the other hand, my '82 300D which I installed a GM 4.3L V6 with T700R4 trans. has achieved about 28mpg on the same trip at the same speeds several times. The 380SL is a lot more fun to drive! It had the hardtop on with the windows up... Regards,
