107 Wood Removal

Hi, I'm new to this forum and I've been slowly restoring my '79 euro 450 SLC, with 60K miles. I've removed rust, stripped and cleaned the interior, and started to prep for spraying. But right now I'm looking at refinishing the wood. I've removed and started on the peice that surrounds the shifter, but now I'll also have to do the panel that holds the AC & heater controls. I've removed the buttons and slid the unit out slightly but I don't want to remove anything from behind, it's just a mess of wiring. The wood looks very thin and doesn't seem to slide off but pull off. I don't want to continue at the risk of cracking the wood but any help or advice from anybody who has refinished their wood or bought wood replacement kits would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Brendan.

Actually I'm refinishing the wood. The peice came out alright, there were three screws coming out from behind the wood. I had to reach around to get to the nuts off.
