500SL Rear Wind Screen

Just got back from a cruise between NW Chicago to Cinnci and back.
350ish miles, 6 hours with a couple of quick breaks and construction !!!

Almost all highway (except for the construction at Indiana/Ill border BAD).

I tell you the SL is a dream, cruising between Cinnci and Indianapolis over an hour cruising at 86, never touched the gas.

Indi to Chic had over an hour just under 90.

BUT the reason for the post. I picked up a rear windscreen from someone here a year + ago (Thanks again). That thing is amazing, it was clear, sunny, low 80s I would get warm and have to reach back and flip it down to let some cool air in. Prefered that to rolling down the window.

At 80 or 90 the cabin was almost like the top was up. Not windy, the stereo was fine.

Didn't want to run the air, actually I found out on the way it needs a recharge, and thats why I have a convertible. The vents didn't seem to pull in enough cool air. Even with the screen down, the cabin was comfortable, but it REALLY made a difference.

I always wondered why it wasn't just made as part of the roll bar. There is a noticable difference if you keep it folded and put the roll bar up vs using it as designed.

It make a HUGE difference. I can flip up the wind screen and roll up the windows, and it becomes almost windless inside the cabin. I love this on the freeway, as I have been up to 110 mph with just the wind deflectors and windows up, and there is very little wind interefering with me in the cabin.

I think it wasnt integrated because many of the Euro models got the rear kiddie seat. The kiddies cant sit back there if there was a permanent screen.

i agree...its amazing the amount of wind noise and flow that is reduced by the windscreen. Mine has a small hole in it so I am going to see if this specialty windo/screen shop here can replace athe mesh like you would do on a screen door vs $400 new or maybe $200 on ebay for replacement.

Len: The hole in mine is small also but it still "bugs" me so I will try and see what this screen repair place might be able to do as soon as I can.

I use Precision Motors on Murray Ave in Cincinnati for any work I can't do or don't feel like doing. They only work on Mercedes, and have all the equipment, etc for most jobs. I have had them work on my 95 E420( sold) and my 85 380SE. Work is good and prices fair. They have been doing this since the late 70's.
