Inside Valve Cover Observation - Timing Chain?

I polished a valve cover I had lying around, and I got another in to polish - I had previously obtained a set cheap, but the usual (LH) one was broken, for the usual reason, the timing chain. Anyway, this "new" LH cover is OK, but it has some significant grooves in it from the chain. Either this is indicative of the chain/tensioner about to go (possible), or applying the bad fix to valve cover gasket leaks (tightening the heck out of them, and not replacing the gaskets). I do know that there is very little clearance in this area. Opinions?
