Am I right when I think alternator or similar?
560 SL 194K excellent condition. Running superior.
Last night coming down I 95 all of a sudden, lights on dash began to dim along with all cabin lights on accessories. Headlights began to dim. SBS, ABS, Engine Light, Brake Light all came on. Car continued to run for about another 30 miles @ 60MPH. Gradually speed reduced, car shut down. After sitting lights came back up but not enough power to start the car. Towed to shop! Whats your diagnosis?

Len got it right...most likely the voltage regulator brushes. Around $40 and 20 minutes and you're good to go.

I thought the alternator had the brushes, armature, stator and the mag windings. The regulator can be internal of the alternator or external depending on age (solid state vs points type). In the old days, the regulator was mounted elsewhere in the engine compartment.

on an 88 the regulator will be integral to the brush package.
as noted above, cheap and easy to replace. tom w
