Winter alpine trip advice
Wife and I are considering motoring over to Provence in December/January for a short holiday. While I'll be sticking to autoroutes on the way, I'm considering a fairly adventurous route home (Route de Napoleon from Cannes to Grenoble, then up through Switzerland to Stuttgart to take in the new museum, across Luxembourg and Belgium and back to the port at Ijmuiden for ferry transport to Blighty); we'll be staying in the southern foothills of the Alps.
What precautions need I take with the SL? I assume winter tyres are a must as I will be straying off the motorways and into some fairly high territory (I'm presently running Continental Sport Contact 2s all round--these won't do, will they?), but do I really need chains? Will winter tyres be OK? Or am I mad for even thinking about taking anything other than a Range Rover...?

Lucky you...
I took this route few years ago in a rented Volvo and had no problems except keeping my eyes on the road ahead as the scenery was absolutely incredible. You gonna be driving the most overly engineered car in the world, so don't you worry about a think. Just drive carefully and hope for a weather break and make sure your top is properly sealed. Cheers...Lee
