I was told indeed that until 1998 (when it became standard) it was only as an $800 option.

In the UK late '96 available as a cost option - standard on '99 model year (SL500 & SL600) which was available from 08/98 - still a cost option on 6 cylinder cars that didn't go to the US however.

On U.S. SL500s Xenons were never standard!
