I didn't do this

I am so excited. After spending about two months reading as many of these great posts as I could, I finally got my own 450sl ('77). It is kind of in rough shape, but the car kept calling my name. When the dealer dropped the price about $3000 without me asking him to, how could I resist?

The first thing I saw when I opened to hood was this golf tee acting as a plug. Can anyone please explain to me if this should just be plugged, or should there be a line attached to it, and where would it go?

Thanks for letting me be a part of a great site.

Congrats for your new purchase and welcome to the "show!"

First thing you might want to do is degrease that engine compartment. Vacuum lines get brittle with age, so be careful.

That golf tee looks like it is plugging up a vacuum line opening for the idle controller valve (air valve). Not sure what year your 450 is but I'm assuming a late 70's CIS equipped model?

Get yourself a manual and get ready to do some renewing. ********az at www.*************** is a great source of parts, as well as our local vendor here GermanStar.

Thanks for the quick response. I have a couple of manuals on the way, and already have a Haynes that came with the car.

I looked through some previous posts on engine degreasing, but it seems unclear about whether the engine should be warm, running, or where not to get water.

The car is a 1977 so I believe that it has the CIS

Thanks

Yup, it's CIS all right.

I went and looked at the engine on my '79. That hole has a rubber plug on it. Very official looking. So apparently it doesn't do anything. Go ahead and paint the golf tee black...and call that that.

There are different versions of that hose. Some have the "A" & "B" ports some have only the "A" port. Not all cars needed the B port but figuring out which one to order is a pain. If you need only the one port but get the hose with two, a golf T works. (Black RTV looks better).

Congrats on the new car.

Thanks for all the help. I did replace the golf tee with a vacuum plug but saved the tee for future smiles. This is a great forum.
