That was actually a pretty nice sports car, until it was exposed to air, after which it would quickly oxidize to brown crumbs. I saw this happen to a few in Chicago (including one my boss's wife drove).

Back in the 60's and 70's we used to say that Fiats were easy to work on because you could find parts all along the road.

There is no question that the body design of the fiat is superior to the Mercedes (in my opinion), however having once owned a fiat—I would never have one again. The car literally fell apart in the driveway, the craftsmanship and fit and finish is by far inferior to the Mercedes.

fiat or sl

For what it is worth, a better comparison is an Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce and an SL, say the 230, 250 or 280. In my mind, once you get past this series they are really not sports cars but small sedans with space for 2. The 380, 450 and 560 are wonderful cars, great build quality, but for the money and pleasure of feeling the road and the great sound of a 2-liter twin cam spider...you just can't beat it. I own a pristine 78 and would not part with it...on the other hand, I would love to have both the 230sl and keep my spider. Last year, I bought a 91 300CE coupe for my wife that I love driving...it handles like a dream and is an exceptional car in every respect, however, when I want to drive and I mean drive...I take the spider out along the winding country roads...it is truly an amazing experience.

In the summer of '76 Car and Driver did a comparison test among a dozen or so convertibles. The list included the Mercedes 450SL and a Fiat Spyder. The Fiat was the overall winner...
