Trick question

I have a neighbor who owns a 560SL in really nice shape. I was quizing him on it this weekend and he though he could sell it for $14-15k. I forgot to ask what year model, but here is what I do know:

It has the 15 hole wheels on it
It has 107,000 miles
NO RECORDS
Is very clean
Everything except the cruise works fine
Runs great

If I had to guess, I would say it was an 86 or 87 year model.

Here is the question...
What is this car truely worth? I don't want to let on to him that I am very interested. The car is not up for sale at this time and I think I could low ball him on the price. I am not really in the market for one, but if the price was right, that car would be hard to pass up.

Ask him if he had the 100,000 mile service done on it? I believe this is rather expensive. You also may want to call the dealer and ask HIM for the price of this service. At least you will have more info!

The W107 is updated in 1985. The car got the 15 hole wheels, different door handles (slightly curved in the door panel instead of on the door), different front bumper (lower part) and some interior changes...
In the Netherlands the price of the car is not related to the exact model year (85-89) but is determined by the state the car is in.

Q, from your description of the car, I think it is worth between $13K and $15K if it is an '86 or 87 model; for '88 or '89 model, add a couple of thousand more. You may need to spend another $1K to $2K to bring it up to par but it may still be worth it. Good luck ...

HI Q!,
I recently bought an 86 560sl ..black with tan interior. The condition is close to excellent. I did have to put shocks in it and I had the timing belt changed..but other than the cruise control and the fact that the odometer is now a bit slow..it is an awesome car..and it has nearly 200k on it..i am very happy.
I paid 7500 bucks to a VERY motivated seller.
