I'm going to prep my friend's '85 280 SL for the summer season, but I've never thought to look for the oil filter when I was doing other maintenance on the car. Where is it? Is it a spin-on or a canister-type, and what brand of filter is recommended? Does M-B simply use Mann filters with M-B logos on them, or are M-B filters superior? Any info much appreciated!

Don't know much about an '85 280SL but on our '80 450SL the oil filter is not a spin on. It is a cartridge that resides in a can like housing that can only be accessed from under the vehicle. Really messy when it comes time to change oil.
I get my oil filters from Mercedes Parts shop and have not had any problem. Hope that this helps!
