The only thing I can think of is put a hook through the grille (or possibly break the grille, $45 vs $1000's for the hood) ????

This is a bit of 'close the gate after the horse has bolted' advice but I have connected a wire to the hood release on both my MBs and my truck. The wire, a small dia. brass brazing rod, is hooked around the release arm and hangs down behind the grill. You can't see it from the outside and it takes a bit to fish it out but it is sure as hell better than the alternative to a broken cable which is,....., well there is not alternative.

I have 2 junk slcs and have looked for a way to open the hood from the outside without doing major damage. I haven't found one yet. I am sure that some indie who specializes in MBs could tell you. I doubt that the dealer can be very helpful since they make their money selling you new grills and hoods.

I tried to find a answer from the MB CD and searching this site but did not find a answer for you. If you have a way that does not destroy the grill I may have to follow Kip suggestion before mine breaks.

cavitycop, I think quite a few owners would like to know the 'how to's' for this...are you going to post them?

How can one remove the hood if one can't open it?

I just had a look at my 1977 slc hood release cable, etc. and this might be a way to release the hood with a broken cable.

This depends on where the cable is broken. If it is broken at the hood release then I think you are basically sol. If it is broken at the handle then this might work.

If you look through the grill on the pass. side up where the hood ties into the grill you can see the release cable housing running left to right. Straighten out a coat hanger or similar stiff wire. Bend a hook in the wire and catch the cable housing. By pulling on the housing I am able to release the hood. Granted, my cable is not broken and this solution may rely on the fact that both ends are fastened and thereby I can create tension to trip the catch.

If this fails remove the release handle in the car and see if you can see the end of the cable in the housing. Even if the cable is broken off flush with the end of the housing or up inside a bit I am thinking that if you can crush the housing on to the cable with vice grips enough to stop the cable from sliding in the housing then you might be able to hook the housing under the grill and see if it will open.

There is talk of cutting out the grill to get to the release. From what I've seen I don't think that removing the housing will give you access to the release.

I just had another look and although this a slightly more drastic solution it might work when all else fails. The MB emblem in the top front center is a little forward of the release center. The back (towards the windshield) of the emblem is directly over the release. By drilling a 3/8" hole just behind the emblem you can look down onto the release. I think that with a strong, flat bladed screwdriver you can grab the lip of the release which faces to your right and pry it to the left. The handle of the screw driver will move right. Be sure to push down on the hood as you pry to relieve the pressure on the release hook.

I just had this occur to my 87 190E. I could really use the advice as well. The cable is connected on the handle.

I also considered breaking the plastic shell inside the chrome casing.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
