I am looking at SL's and hopefully I will find one to purchase.
I saw one today, it was an 83. The weird thing about this car was that the speedometer only went up to 80mph. All other SL's that I saw had speedometers that went up to 160. Could this be a grey market car? Has anyone ever seen this before? Thanks |

There were 85 MPH speedometers on a lot of cars in the late 70's early 80's. I think it was a law at one time after the arab oil embargo.

Our '80 450 SL has a speedo that only goes to 85. I believe that this Federal requirement wasn't relaxed until sometime in the mid 80's. Ours is a bona fida American 450.
The car will peg out the speedo although I haven't done it often. 450's 4 ever !

speedo
The above info is true with the Federal law . I am in the process of changing mine to a true german one with a top out of 260KM. Everything appears to be the same and I already have put in a German tranny so it should be accurate.
