87 560SL Power Steering Fluid

The old girl is groaning when the wheels are turned. Where do I check the power steering fluid? There is no information in the manual.

On the LH (drivers) side of the front of the engine, there is a round disk with a knob on it, on top of a pump. There are two belts hooked up in parallel to the pump. The knob unscrews, the lid comes off, and you can check the level. Many people say do NOT use ATF, use power steering fluid.

I'm one of them. Flushed a Mercedes system once and filled with Dexron. The steering groaned when turning. Flushed again and put a dedicated power steering fluid in and the groan went away. Maybe a previous owner changed the fluid in yours and used ATF?

Yup...I opened it up and the fluid was red...I flushed and filled with MB PS fluid. No more groans.
