Looking at an 88 560SL...What Should I Look For?

I own a 300SD and have been on the diesel forum for a few years. My BMW 535i got totalled in a rear-ender. Thinking about the 560SL as a replacement. Found one for around $11k with about 140k on the odom. Suggestions on what to look for welcome!

Thanks

Well, not too good, 15-16 in the city, 18 on the highway, on premium, and that's babying it - less if you are agressive. The speed is a fun factor, though. My 380SL gets somewhat better gas mileage on unleaded, but is a LOT slower.

BTW, that's pretty higher end money for a car with that mileage (particularly in winter) unless it is exceptional in appearance and upkeep, with records.

Lots to look for. I bought an 88 560 sl this past June with 45000 original miles and no winters, full service history, new top. Red exterior and black int. You need to look for the vin tags on all body panels. if they are missing it usually signifies accident damage. Look under the car and check the sub frame mounts and engine mounts to see if they are collapsed. make sure the ventillation is operating correctly.

Here's everthing you ever want to know about a 560sl. http://www.oursl.com/research/research_splash.htm

Most importantly check out the Photo essay link. It will show exactly what to look for when inspecting a car.

Finally make sure you get a prepurchase inspection done by a mechanic.

Good luck.
