Strange IR lock problem
Hi all,
Interesting forum. Guess just what I need, as I have just bought a 500 SL ’93 without sufficient documentation. Have been searching the web for days and weeks, just to find limited information’s about the way the car has been configured. To me this car has been a dream for years, and there it was and the price seemed very attractive. Just to let you know, that we have 200% car tax plus 25% sales tax in Denmark, so even a 13 year old Mercedes is very expensive. In general the car looks perfect. No rust, no scratches, no signs of age. But I do have a couple of problems, which I can’t seem to figure out. I can see from this forum, that some people have problems with the IR door lock. So have I, but not like the ones described in the forum. Together with the car I got a key where the IR only worked one time, and the you had to manually lock or unlock the doors and trunk. Only if the batteries polarizations was switched around it would work one more time. The I had to change the polarizations again. Seemed like a remote key IR problem, so I bought a new IR key from Mercedes, and it worked 3 times (daylight) and then failed when I got home, at this time it was dark. Another thing I discovered, which I haven’t seeen before. Was a red LED flashing in a blank cover in the second left switch position in the console, where the fanfare switch, according to the manual, should be placed. It flashes when all doors are locked – manually. I also see the LED in the door handle, flashing for almost 10 sec, which the manual describe it will do when one of the doors or trunk is not all closed – but they are… Any idea what is wrong…? Maybe there is something I don’t know yet about the locking mechanism. According to the repairman who installed a immobilizer in the car, there isn’t an alarm in it… so, can anyone tell me what the red flashing light is in the console when the car has been locked. |

My red LEDs will flash when I am forced to lock the car manually. Perhaps there is an open signal from one of the doors or the trunk even though they appear (and probably are) fully closed. Last, the sunlight is going to affect the operation of the IRs. A car that old will have scratches in the lenses that will affect the IR signature reception. Good luck and happy motoring. I love my car regardless of it's odd behavior at times!!

It's freezing is that it...?
Thank you Mike for your suggestions about the flashing LED. I guess I have to remove the console to see what’s hidden behind that flashing LED. Must go somewhere and have some sort of flashing timer connected to something sensing the locking condition. Maybe this dummy thing, actually screw up the original locking mechanism. Cross my fingers, that disconnecting the LED and what’s behind it, may solve my problem using the remote IR control.
What strikes me is that the remote worked when the Mercedes mechanics just tested it before he gave me the new key. At that time it was bright sunlight. And it worked when I got back to the office, still bright weather. But as soon it got dark, it didn’t work anymore. Only difference was that it was freezing at the time. Anyone knowing about problems with the locks, except for the usual ones with freezing doors etc… that could influence the remote? Today it’s still freezing and the remote still don’t work. Another strange thing I found out trying the locking mechanism manually today was, that the flashing indicates that the trunk or one of the doors aren’t closed, but it differ depending which door I lock. The right one flash the led in the handle for more than 10 sec. but the trunk or left door doesn’t… |
