1999 500sl change tranny fluid yes or no?

IM changing the fluids(preventive maintenance) on car i just bought. It has 72000 miles and the trans. runs perfect. should fluid be changed or left alone. I dont find much faith in lifetime fluids!!!!! thanks

What does the owners manual say? I changed the fluid in my 1991 Sl300 at about 100K miles, but it was 15 years old by then. I don't know if the P.O. had ever changed it. The genuine MB fluid is expensive ( about $13 per quart ) and my tranmission required 7 quarts. Don't forget the filters and gaskets.

Try a search - this has been kicked around ad nauseam.

I would change it - and also check the gearbox ECU loom at the same time as the plug leaks ATF into it. There is a revised part number to fit.

Tranny fluid

If you check your manual it reads that your transmission is a service free sealed unit but that was back in 1999, if you want peace of mind , have it service at the dealer.
My 2 cents

change it!!

The cost of the MB fluid is cheaper than a new tranny. George Murphy (technical director for the MBCA says yes, change the fluid even if Mercedes says you don't need to) I changed mine in my sl600 at 50k miles and will do so again at 100k mi if not 75k mi just for good measure. It's easy to do, and really not that expensive.

Just my 2 cents, but I know people will say i am wasting money, but you roll the dice and take your chances.

My '99 SL500 goes in on Wed. for the trans/torque convertor/cooler drain, replace filter, add pan magnet etc. Car has 55,000 on the clock and I'll do it again at 100K. I just can't buy into this lifetime thing.

I agree with the guys above, there's no such thing as lifetime fluid. I bought my SL with 73,000 miles on it, and one of the first things I did was change ALL the fluids. I can tell you one thing, the old stuff coming out didn't look or feel like the new stuff going in !

Consider it cheap insurance. Inspecting the fluid you drain could clue you in to a problem before it causes a catastrophic failure.

I say change it. Change it all !!
