Steering wheel removal?

I have a 1985 380SL that has an original steering wheel which I'd like to replace with a wooden Nardi wheel.

What is the proper way to uninstall the steering wheel?

Also, I was advised that some of these later SLs have an airbag system in the steering wheel, however the manual states that you only have an airbag if the steering wheel boss has SRS on it; mine doesn't. As well, the SRS light in the dash doesn't light up when the car starts so I suspect it doesn't have an airbag?

It's wheely easy

Hi

Removal of the (non airbag) wheel is dead easy - it's held on by an allen bolt (hex head) - can't remember the exact size but it's quite big.

You first lever off the central plastic cover ( just clips around the edges)

Remove the horn push ( suggest it may be an idea to remove the fuse first as I've blown at least one doing this process!)

Then ideally you need a long allen driver/hex Key to remove the bolt from the base of the wheel - if you haven't a long enough allen key (My problem the first time I did this) remove the cage which holds the horn push (4 cross head screws)

Undo and remove the large allen bolt (Hex head bolt) which holds the wheel onto the splined shaft.

Pull the wheel off - if it's never been off before it takes a bit of effort BUT it's not a taper shaft - try putting you knees behind the wheel and pushing with your feet - needs to be an even pull.

re-installation is just the reverse (don't forget to re-fit the horn push in the new wheel!)

Whole job takes anout 20 minuites PLUS half an hour to find the right allen key/ Hex driver!!!

Cheers

Jim

Hello,

Thank you for the information.

As I understand it, I also have to install some sort of a sized hub adapter for the Nardi wheel on top of the column as well.

Momo

Hi

Don't know about the NARDI wheel - My is a MOMO wood rim wheel and it's a straight replacement - looks great as well and I can now get in and out with ease.

Cheers

Jim

I don't think you have to remove the horn pad. If you do, it is very difficult to remove it without tearing and also difficult to reinstall it neatly.

Usually that center hex bolt is VERY TIGHT and you are turning it against the wheel lock so I strongly suggest using an impact wrench to break it free. Believe me, it is the way to go. 5 seconds and it's out.

How would you get to the bolt if you don't remove the horn pad?

You CAREFULLY remove the embelem at the center by prying up very carefully on an edge (it pops right back in). It specifically advises against removing the pad in the shop manual on second-gen wheels (like on a 380), because of the risk of damaging the pad when removing/replacing it. If you screw up the embelem, it's inexpensive to replace (maybe $3.00 at perf products?).

Remember, the center bolt is REALLY tight, don't strip it, and DO NOT RELY on the steering lock to brace the wheel! Use your knees or have a friend help.

Ah, I suspected as much. Thank you.

Also, regarding air-bags, if my wheel doesn't have SRS engraved on it, does it mean there is no airbag system?

My dash does have an SRS light, but it never light ups.
