560SL hood pad
I took the hood pad off of my 560SL a couple of weeks ago and before I put the new one on I want to ask a few questions. I was sure that the little cut out at the rear of the pad went on the driver's side as shown in the first photo. Note that photo is not from my car, but one I grabbed off the internet. But I also thought that the foam side was facing the engine and the cloth side was glued to the hood. Well, they both can't be right. Maybe it's just that the old pad was so deteriorated that I couldn't tell for sure.
So is the first photo the correct orientation of the pad? Does the foam get glued to the hood and the cloth side faces the engine? That's my guess now that I think about it, but it's a lot easier to ask and get it right the first time rather than tyring to undo an improper installation. Thanks.

I just went out back to check my '88 560SL. The hood pad was replaced by the previous owner and was installed by the M-B dealer. It was installed like your first photo with the cutout on the driver's side by the firewall. It looks like the fabric-type material faces the engine. Good luck with the install.

I think that the notch towards the back is for the brake booster.

Thanks guys - that's what I thought. The old, original one I took off must have already had the fabric portion fall off.

Installed the hood pad today. It eventually came out okay. Actually it really looks good. I left the hood in place to do the job. Did the small rear section first. Bought the special Mercedes adhesive for this job that John recommended here - Old Hood Pad Removal. That stuff was the messiest product I ever used. It got all over me, my fingers got glued together, all over the sheet I was using to protect the engine and the brush attached to the lid came apart. I chose to use this product rather than the 3M 8090 spray because I figured it would be easier to paint on the adhesive back in that small space. It was a royal PIA, but I'm not sure that it still wasn't a decent idea to use it for the small pad. However, I would never use it for the large front pad. I went out and bought two cans of the 3M stuff, masked everything off and sprayed away. The front section of the pad went so much smoother with the spray. To me, it's a no brainer for the front section.

Hood pad replaced on 450SL
I replaced the hood pad on my '73 450sl three weeks ago and it took less than 60 minutes from start to finish. I placed plastic sheeting over the engine bay, front window, and fenders. I removed the old pad with a 4" razor scrapper and used 3M adhesive remover to clean the surface. I used 3M spray (one can was sufficient) on both the front and rear pads. I sprayed both the hood and the foam pad. I used a 7 inch paint roller to press the pad to the hood. That process worked slick. I also had to figure out which side was glued to the hood, foam or smooth surface, and figured Mercedes did not intend someone to look under the hood and see foam. Besides, the rear piece gave me the answer as it can only be applied properly with the foam side glued to the hood.

Any chance you worked for Texaco in Whiteplains?

Hi, thinking of replacing my pad, too. What are the advantages exactly? Just a more quiet ride?

What is the "rear section"? Is it a seperate hood pad from the large pad over the engine? If so, anybody have a part number for a 560SL? Inquiring mind wants to know. Thanks.

The rear section of the hood uses a separate pad. It is referred to as the "hood seal". It goes behind the metal rib, at the back of the hood and goes on with adhesive. The heavy duty 3M spray adhesive works well.
You can buy it from the "Buy Parts" link at the top of the page, or from many of the parts sources on the web. Part number is 09000-71948. It is found in the body or body trim section. I put one in and it was a very good fit. |

Quiets the engine noise down some and protects your hood paint from engine heat.
Hood pad part numbers: Big front pad - 107 682 03 26 Small rear section - 107 880 00 97 Cost under $100 total for the two of them.

Falling Hood Pad
The pad I put in my 88 560SL 2 years ago has deteriorated to the point that I have to install again. I used the 3M spray for my job at that time and found, as you did, that it worked fine. When I opened the hood 2 days ago, a part of the main pad was hanging down. Don't know if the 3M failed or what. When I touched the pad, it came apart in my hands. The material clearly had deteriorated. Where did you get the pad you used? I have found 2 types on the Web, one at $49 and one from Germany for $79. Don't know which is best. I'd like to avoid having to re-install again in another 2 years. Any help w/b appreciated.
