98 SL60AMG - BAS/ASR light stays on

I have a 1998 SL60 AMG which has been stored over the winter and the battery ran itself flat - after charging the battery the engine starts but hunts badly, the throttle pedal has no effect on engine revs and the BAS/ASR light stays on. I think the problem is probably to do with the ASR becoming unable to determine direction because the battery went flat but I do not know how to reset it. I have tried turning the steering from lock to lock but made no difference - any ideas or help much appreciated.

Not sure if this applies to your car, but on my 91 SL, I had a battery problem and blew one of the two fuses on the OPV relay. This is on the firewall side of the passenger side of the car, under a plastic cover. The relay itself is maybe 2" x2" x 4" tall. It has a cover on it that opens. under that cover is two fuses.

But again - I don't know the 98 SL.

Is the new battery brand new or just some other?
Try to remove the one of the leads from battery for some minutes and you should check the battery if this one allso needs some chargeing.
I had the same problem with S500 when the battery voltage was low. You car idles bad around 300-500 rpm right?...ASR/ABS modul works with throttle control modul in m119 engine and the described problem starts when the battery voltage is under 12 volts....
You might need to check fuses too...probably blown @ OVP

Asr

I'm not sure this applies but in my 99 SL the ASR/BAS is reset by turning your wheels all the way to the stop point, left until it stops and all the way right untill it stops, also ASR/BAS are sensitive to voltage, a weak battery will set it off
my 2 cents

one more thing, the brake light switch has extra circuits in it to tell the brake assist and the asr that your foot is off the brake.common problem, only use OEM switch.

Sorted at last - after replacing brake switch, new batterry and several tries resetting BAS/ASR systems turning steering full lock etc. all which made no difference, diagnostic plugged in and although engine showed no errors just reset errors and problem solved !!

Regards
