Purchased a replacement hood emblem for a 1997 SL500. It has two posts on the back of it. Cannot figure out how to get the old one off. Help please!!

I googled on Mercedes Hood Star Replace How and chose the description on Benz Bin which reads as follows.
"Tech Tip: Replacing a Mercedes hood star or emblem is generally a job that any do it yourself person can accomplish. The most common applications only require the use of a common set of pliers. Simply open up the hood, pull down on the u-shaped bracket and rotate the bracket ninety degrees and remove the Mercedes hood star from the top." That's how I did mine. Steve '97 S320 |

Steve, the SL has an emblem rather than the star assembly. I believe the emblem is on with 2 faced tape. Heat may loosen it up enough to pry it off with a soft object. Just make sure there is nothing on the other side of the hood holding it.

The replacement emblem Phil from Fastlane sent does not have tape. It has 2 posts ( no screws/bolts ) on back. I`m a bit reluctant to just try and pry it off with a wedge or blade of some sort.

I wish I had my SL here at work so I could take a peek,,, but look under the hood where the emblem sits. If there are no retainers of any kind holding the emblem on it has to be on there either through a friction fit that the two posts fit in to or 2 face tape on the emblem itself. Either way requires you to pry it off. I use a fiber stick the glass shops use for their glass work. Yes you have to be VERY careful prying around as you can easily chip the paint.

The two posts fit into a 1 plastic gromet that expands in the hood when the badge is pushed in. The other post just goes into a hole in the hood to keep it from rotating I'm not sure about the 129, but on the 107 you can see these post sticking through the undeside of the hood through a hole by the latch. You should be able to push the badge out from this acces area. This is alot easier on the 129's than the 107' because the bagde on the 107 has a small barb to it. The 129 just has smoth posts. Im sorry I got rid of my 129 hood long ago so I cant check it for you. But I did remove the badge first and that was not difficult. I recomend replacing the plastic gromet as well when replacing the badge.

I replaced my badge on my '92 SL. Go up inside, find the posts and push gently. Once you get it started, pull it off the hood with your fingers. I used the old gromets and pushed the new one in place.

SL500 97 emblem came off easy
Apparently my hood is different as I could not get to the underside of the emblem without removing the hood release mount. The floss didn't lift the emblem either, just broke, but it did "floss it" by removing the build up of wax etc around the emblem's circumference. That made it easy to slip a very thin-blade drywall mud spreader (wide putting knife) -- with a shop cloth protecting the paint -- under the emblem. It rose easily off the hood with very little prying force applied under one side and then the other. I prepped with Meguires paint cleaner, polish and wax before slipping the new emblem into the two holes in the hood. Tip: use a cloth and toothpicks to clear the holes of cleaner and wax that could lessen their grip on the new emblem (hate to see something so pretty fly off the car!)

It's just a function of pressure. I was able to pry it up gently when I got a finger nail under it. It was difficult till I got that first little bit of seperation. Passing thought in my head...Since you will be tossing the old one out, try some sort of suction puller , like the no paint sucker, or glue something on it then pull. Once started it will pop right off.
