This is good information!!!

I have yet another question.

Bought a new battery on January 20, 2007. Last time I drove the car was on Super Bowl day, as the weather here in Maryland had not cooperative and too many salt on the road.

The car is hooked up to a trickle charger when it is not running and the indicator on the charger has been green.

This weekend I was going to take the car out but the battery did not have enough cranking power to start the car. What is draining the battery? How do I go by looking for culprit? I don't own any of the meter you guys mentioned here. I can get the Roadside guys out here to test for me, but I need to know what to look for, and ask the right questions.

Why the trickle charger not keeping the charge up? Do you think there is something draining the battery and how do I what is draining the battery, or the car simply has been sitting too long? A defective new battery?

Question: What kind of trickle charger do you have? If it is one of those cheapie Harbor Freight ones it won't keep the battery charged if you have an aftermarket radio. You need a charger that will put out 13.8 volts to the battery. Another problem is that even with the 13.8 volts to the battery, the plates will become sulphated unless the voltage is cycled occasionally. The more expensive chargers will do this. My charger has a desulphating cycle that takes about 24 hours to run, but helps maintain the battery in good shape through the winter. There are some really nice RV chargers that do all the stuff neccessary to keep a battery in good condition, you are looking at around $200 for a completely automatic one.
Progressive Dynamics has a real good description of Battery charging and maintenance for dummies on their site. Read this:

http://www.progressivedyn.com/battery_manage_101.html

Their charger with the charge wizard will keep batteries alive. Click on their service dept button, then the hot deals button and check out the PD9100 series - you have to get the charger and the charge wizard separately.

Richard,
Thanks for the reply. The trickle charger is by Deltran Battery Tender. It says 12V @ 1.25A.

I do not have after market radio or accessories on the car.

If I understand correctly, my Deltran is not strong enough to charge the battery? So I need to get one that will put out at least 13V, right?
