I just purchased a 82 380SL.
It is in fine shape but I have a question that maybe this group can answer. When the car is running there is a whining sort of noise or maybe a high pitched hum sound that is coming from the back of the car on the passenger side in the truck. Is this the fuel pump and if so is this normal. Thanks Ed ed@edhayes.com |

Fuel Pump noise
the Fuel pump on my SL is fairly quiet, you can hear a faint hum if you really listen for it. On my 300SE, the pump was much louder. Then driving home from a Fla vacation, the sound level about doubled and the pump quit approximately 8 hours later. Got stranded on I 95. On the advice of other owners we drove on the noisy pump for about 18 months before it quit. I guess the moral of the story is a noisy pump is probably trying to tell you it is wearing out, but it may last a long time. The cost of the pump was reasonable. I think I would change it the next time you change the fuel filter. Better than being stranded.
