92 500SL wiper blade insert??
I'm having a hard time believing i need help with this! I want to replace the rubber part of the wiper blade insert only-all the metal parts are good.
I've got the blade off, but each end of the blade has a molded black plastic cap, which if i could remove would appear to allow the new rubber insert slide in easily. problem-can't seem to figure out how to remove the cap. is there some trick to doing this? |

Presuming your wiper arm is still the original style you need to pull out the two metal "stays" and then the insert. Reassembly is the opposite. No caps or ends or pieces, just the insert and two metal pieces.
Here is how I do it: First I remove the blade assembly from the wiper arm and work on a table. The extreme end of the insert has a rectangular hole in the side. This is for the 'hook' on the end of the metal "stay" to insert. To work the 'stay' out, flex the tip of the rubber insert to one side pulling the hook part of the 'stay' out of the rectangular hole. While it is clear of the hole, grab the end of the metal 'stay' with pliers and pull it out of the end of the blade. Remove the other metal 'stay' the same way. You can then work the unsupported rubber piece out of the arm and insert the new rubber. Slide the metal 'stays' in as they were and work the hooked tips back into the little rectangular holes. If you don't get the hooks back in the holes the metal stays will work out as you drive and it will come apart on you.

thanks for the comments
i believe the blade holder (metal arm) is original as it's marked R129, the rubber insert is not a conventional insert with the springy thin metal strips and squeeze ears running along the edge. the blade holder (arm) has a plastic molded plug at each end which is defying removal-if i could get it out it looks as though the rubber replacement would slide right in. |

You may have a newer type arm or perhaps a replacement assembly that uses a different refill or... Is it possible that your arm is not refillable?
Mine sys "129" without the R and does not show a full MB Part number. I'm reasonably sure my shop has replaced it, but it is the original style for a '92 SL and even looks like the one on my 92 400E as well as the one on my 87 300E and even all the way back to the '74. They come apart the same way. I also need to correct something in my earlier post. The rectangular holes go towards the base of the wiper arm and the end pair of metal tines of the wiper arm itself go into them. There ARE other holes for the hooks on the ends of the 'stays' to insert to keep them from slippiing out as the wipers operate as well. Good Luck!
