'88 560sl Ignition stall

Hope someone can relate and find solution to my puzzle.

560sl's engine occasionally stalls after driving for few minutes. can't get the engine to restart unless I wait few minutes. Once the engine restarts the car runs fine till I cutoff the ignition.

This symptom has been happening more frequently and is very unsettling as it happens either when I am driving on the highway or in a local traffic. Potentially very dangerous so I would like to find the culprit and fix it. Can anyone relate to this description?

Hope someone can help. could this be a vacuum related problem?

Thank you

I am having the same problems with one of my 420sel's. I have not been able to find the culprit but the most likely candidates include the crank position sensor (triggers the ignition module to fire), ignition coil, ignition control module (big bucks) or it could be a host of other smaller items such as a bad connection or a corroded fuse etc. I will let you know when I find the culprit. Let us know when you find yours. It could be fuel related as well such as a bad fuel pump relay or somehow the fuel pumps loosing power.

you both are almost certain to need a new crank poition sensor.if my mem serves the original ones had a green wire to single plug on ezl and new ones a black wire.these sensors have been very reliable and i believe are going out more from age than any other cause.the one good thing is that they give warning rather than strand you completely unlike the late models.

Crank Position Sensor

Your diagnosis for CPS sounds very reasonable and you may be spot on as I' ve read other MB models having similar problems and fixing it with the sensor replacement. Where is the sensor located and is it easy to replace on my own. Where can I purchase one?

thanks for a diagnosis.

tough to get at.you need to go get from dealer and have in your hand so you can see exactly what needs to come off.[there is a metal bracket very close to transmission end]if you have correct tools you will find job easy.sensor is located on drivers side of firewall where trans meets engine, there is a cutout in trans bell housing shaped like a U.

560sl Crank Position Sensor

Has anyone replaced this sensor in 107 chassis. I would love to have some detailed replacement direction. Are there 2 sensors. TDC sensor at the front of the engine and the Crank Sensor at the rear of the engine? I saw a price of approx $180 for the rear sensor and $80 for the front sensor. Does this sound reasonable?

Smile Got it fixed

Took a correct diagnosis from david s poole and replaced both the front and rear position sensors. No more engine stalling. Paid $44 for the front TDC position sensor and $129 for rear CPS for parts. Gave up on installing the sensors myself as the location of rear CPS is very tight and is not very accessible. The local mechanic charged $250 for labor. Cuts and bruises plus nearly 2 hours struggling to get the rear CPS installed. I am sure someone can do it DIY. I opted out to fix the car quickly by someone else. This has been a very expensive fix for simple sensor(s) replacement but I can rest easy that I will not be stranded somewhere due to overheating sensors.

Hope this helps and my car is now very smooth. Even the minor shaking during idle is gone.

Hi,
Where did you find the rear sensor for $129? Prices I've seen have been around $225. I'm fighting the same situation right now.

Thanks. I'll check into it. Hope it fixes my non-starting problem.
