560SL steering wheel removel
Need advice!!!
I was able to remove the air bag with no problems. (AFTER first disconnecting the BAT) I tryed a 21/2 ft. breaker bar on the 10mm hex socket to no avail. I then took the car to a friends shop and tried an air impact wrench, again no go. What do I do now??? HELP!! Jim E Dual 560SL's |

I slide a 2' piece of pipe over my 2' breaker to get some more leverage.

Be carefull. MB recomends you break the trorque with the lock on. I have done this many times but I havent had an overtorqued or frozen one.
I would recomend the impact, With the stearing lock off. but the one you tried is probably cheap of in need of an overhaul. Try it again John Roncallo |

I had a friend help me while I held the wheel with the lock off! My mechanic warned me about breaking the lock if not careful!

A good impact gun will break it free...if you are using a cheapo one or too low air pressure it may not...I would sooner use impact than leverage on them. If some fool put loctite red on it you'll need a torch to get it out, but I can't see anyone being that cruel.

Use a brace, not the lock
If you use a breaker bar, as I did on the BMW, do yourself a favor and cut a piece of wood wrap it in old carpeting and use that to hold the wheel in place instead of using the wheel lock. I was able to bear down on the breaker bar without worrying about destroying the wheel lock.
