Looking at a '97 SL320
Going to look at a 1997 SL320 anything special to be looking at? Looks like after some reading here, soft top operation should be a concern? Anything else?
Thanks, Tom

That was the first year of the 722.6 transmission in the SL320, not really a good thing. Early 722.6s had some problems, which of course may have been sorted out by now, but beware of strange transmission behavior.

All of the above, plus more. Try a search. The 722.6 troubles are well chronicled. It's often a fairly shorted lived transmission, with higher maintenance costs, less DIY friendly, and a costly rebuild. I'm sure it's a fine transmission when it's working but if it was me I'd be looking for a 96, or older.

I have a 97 and can say it's been a pleasure with only one problem so far(70,000mi.) Of course i drive like a little ole lady usually, no use to abuse such a nice vehicle. If it looks good visually, USUALLY its been treated good. Most people don't let their kids have it....
Good luck, Ron |
