1995 500 sl problems Loud noise near washer reservoirr
Coming home last night i turned on the lights on my 1995 SL 500 and tried to work the windshield washer. At that point a very loud sound began emitting from the area around the washer fluid reservoir that only stopped when i turned off the lights. when i pulled over and popped the hood not only was it loud, but hte reservoir area was vibrating.
since it was nighttime, i had no choice but to keep the lights on until i could get home. by the time i had gotten home, the noise had lessened, but it as still there. weirdest thing i have ever seen - why would turning the lights on and off affect the washer motor/pump or whatever is over in the front left of the car (front right from driver's perspective). Can anyone tell me what as going on? thanks W

When the headlights are ON, activating the windshield washer also activates the headlight washers and wipers. ( They only run if the headlights are on ) There is a known issue that the pump motor for the headlight washers will run until all the washer fluid is used up. It will continue to run until the pump motor itself burns up. It happens because the wiper motors get out of sync and don't return properly. You can do a search for more info. A temporary fix is to pull the power connector to the headlight wipers/washers.

Yes. There are two pumps on the reservoir. Just touch each one - the one that is running is the one you need to pull the connector off of. Don't pull the pump out becasue if you do, all the fluid runs out the hole left behind.

Everything wears out sooner or later.
You should see what breaks on a much more expensive boat; be happy buying only a new wiper motor.

The original owner of my vehicle paid $106,000 window sticker in 1991. That included the gas guzzer tax, but not the CA 7% sales tax. $106K could have bought 4 really nice domestic vehicles. That price doesn't mean the SL is built/engineered 4 times better than other cars or that it will give 4 times longer service. I agree, for what they cost, you expect the very best. I love my car. It's an extraordinary vehicle with lots of character. I understand that Toyota Camry's are very reliable. But I can't imagine any car more ordinary or mundane.

yes - if you want to impress a client or a babe, i would not suggest driving up in a Camry or an Accord. i find the Mercedes to be a stylish ride and a soul-nourishing experience everytime i take it out for a drive. it certainly makes a statement. it does have some interesting engineering and manufacturing idiosyncrasies.
that being said, i just spent three hours screwing around with the pumps and motors for the wiper/washer system. the pump delivering fluid to the windshield was burned out while the one for the heradlights was not. i switched the two - even though they are different parts (and colors). problem the washer/grommet at the bottom is broken so all of the fluid is leaking out. it is a 75 cent part, so i will replace it and hopefully all will be right in the world.
