car value question

1983 380sl 125,000

chokes at 3000 rpm, gets vapor locked, and the single chain and related parts need attending. oh big rust bubble on door forming. the suspension is great, and so are the breaks and cooling system. Slippy transmission, never had it looked at.

what is a far price to sell this car at? or what should i ask for it.

opinions please.

Difficult to say with your description, you are not painting a very good picture (but I respect your honesty). Why don't you suggest a figure and folks can give you feedback? Do you have photos of the vehicle?

From your description you're going to need to find someone who isn't too bright and yet has lots of money. They're out there but generally aren't shopping for 107s. Once you find them the sky is the limit. But it's going to take a while. The problem is that even low miles, rust free 560SL aren't exactly flying off the lot. You might want to consider donating it and taking the tax write-off.

Considering that a decent 380sl with that mileage probably sells for about $8K today I would say your $2K on ebay isn't far off. A rebuilt transmission will run you about $2500, rust repair - $1k at least, new timing chain - $1K and you're up to $6.5K even before looking at the vapour lock and choke issues.

Dr Frizog

As for the tax write - off except for a rare instances
the tax deduction will be what the car is sold for at
the auction by the charity.

You should have taken the $2000 on Ebay. The car will need many thousands of dollars just to fix what you listed, not including and body/paint work. Sounds like the car was not properly maintained or serviced, so don't expect too much. Get rid of it before the chain breaks or you'll be junking it for parts.

$2000 to $3000 sounds about right IF you can find a buyer. Almost no one wants a 380SL, and certainly no one wants one that needs a lot of work. You should ebay it again and take what you can get.
