Floor Pan Replacement
On my 1969 280SL 113 chasis.
Passenger side floor. Mine is rusted through. I see the part is generally available. I don't do much body, and especially frame type work and will look for someone. However, is this, I understand frameless type car, something that requires someone with specialized equipment and knowelege of to do? Or is it more any reasonably competent frame guy / welder can pop the old one out and get the new one in? Anything else to do while this is being done? Any recommendations of someone to do it in New Jersey? Thanks. |

Try posting this in the Bodywork forum under Do It Yourself Links and Resources.
To address your concerns anyway, the repair method and cost will be dictated by the extent and location of the rust-out. The side sills, or inner rocker panels, are an integral component of the unibody structure. A larger section like an entire floorpan, will of course require complete removal of the interior in the vicinity and everything underneath that interferes with cutting out the old and fitting in the new. And, all the undercoat and soundproofing will need to be removed around the joint as well. The sealant and undercoat is very flammable. Labour to do the actual cutting and fitting and mig-welding is specialized work, but you can do the parts removal, stripping and cutting out the old yourself.

We do a lot of that type of work but are located in Western Pa. Try restoration shops first, then maybe a welding or fabrication shop.

Thank you both.....and I gather that even though this car has a somewhat unique construction, no one is saying this particular job requires more than a competent, but not specialized on this "mechanic".

someone good with a welder should be able to do the job, nothing special other than finesse
