Cut the laces?

I think you'll need to fill in a little more detail for a helpful answer. Axle boot?

Soft top cover

I think he means the soft top cover not the trunk/boot.

I have had luck with putting pressure or pounding on the cover while the crank handle is pressed to the rear. If this does not work check this link for pictures of what you are up against.

What is a boot? I'm guessing it's either the hood or the trunk, but I'm not sure which.

Mercedes actually has a shop procedure covering this

Assuming you have the same problem I had, which was the passenger side lock for the top case cover not releasing, the solution for this is in the manual, job 77-340.
You make up a hook, out of welding wire about the thickness of a coathanger, aprox. 2 ft long., with one end bent so you can control the position of the hook (a bend like an 'L', in the same plane as the hook), the other with a hook having a radius of about an inch.
Open the trunk (boot), and insert the wire's hook end through the right trunk hinge opening and along the bottom of the top compartment. You are trying to snag the cable running along the compartment floor, connected to the right hinge latch. Snag it and pull to release the right latch.
