1. My bad - there is only a "lock" side on the gas door. Looks like the spring handles the unlock when the vacuum is released. I am going to correct my original post.
2. Sounds like you are on to something with the torn connector. Any serious leak anywhere in the path will cause the system not to hold vacuum. You may find something else when you get the system to hold vacuum. Example: if the door switch is bad, you might find that it will lock, but lose all vacuum when you try to unlock. or vice-versa. Or you may have a slow leak that will only cause problems if the car sits for a few days. But, congratulations on getting started.
