I have no agenda other than the truth and sometimes a little humor.
Your question was answered yet you chose to insult other members. Now you are after me for calling you on it.

I do agree on one point. This is silly. Have a good one.

Just an FYI for everybody: Changed my waterpump on my 85 380 SL. It took me 12 hours. I believe it could be done in 6 hours. In my case, I just couldn't believe that MB engineers would be so dumb as to make us remove the harmonic balancer (or is it called an osciallator), and so I wasted 6 hours trying to figure a way to remove the water pump without removing the balancer.

Once I finally bit the bullet and just removed the harmonic balancer, then the job proceeded smoothly enough. Also had to remove the alternator and the distributor. Time consuming but not too difficult.

FYI: I had a 77 450, where it was possible to line-up a notch in the balancer with the bottom bolt of the water pump, and that allowed you to remove the water pump without removing the balancer. But this is NOT the case with the 380SL; you must remove the balancer (IMO).

You had me worried for a moment. I am about to do this on my 72. Thinking about just changing pump seal even although it might cost as much as a cheap aftermarket pump which I wouldn't use. But will check bearings first. Only have a small drip.

I keep posting this FACT, but no one believes me. It MAY be possible on 450SL; it is NOT with 380 or 560, although it is tantalizingly close.

The Mitchell book says 6 hours for this job; oddly enough, I also did this about 2 weeks ago on MY 85 380SL, and it took about that long, including fluids, burping, and so on. But I've done it before.

I know you posted this back on the 4th of March in 2008, but as I read it the FIRST TIME (and now as I write this) you didn't mention any mechanic getting into the job, either from an indee or stealership angle. My assumption (sorry for that) was that this question was being asked from the shadetree mechanical side...i.e.: jack-stands, wife and kids underfoot, the socket that rolled 1/2" beyond your best reach, the works...

Now that you point out that you're 80+ vs. the rest of us "still wet behind the ears" kinda' folks, I can see why you're thinking stealership mechanic and not out in the bright and shinny or dark, cold and damp.

You could have said "I've got a quote for 6 hours and $900.00," but I didn't see that in Post #1.

Maybe, next time, a little more information and a little less vinegar.

BTW: I stand by my estimate and information. The camera has proved quite usefull when the problem has become more than I can handle. And some cameras provide the camcorder angle ("talkies" are included!). When a more experienced mechanic can "hear" what you've recorded, it saves you a lot of time and embarrassment by NOT having to do the "monkey dance & noises" while trying to show the SA what the car was doing, but not right at that time you're at the counter.
