Replacing shift knob
I am thinking of replacing my stock shift knob on my 85 280sl (Euro) 107 ( basically same as US 380sl) with a burl knob. Is there any trick to removing the stock shift knob and replacing it with a new one?
Thanks, Desert |

is it an auto or manual? If its an auto here goes-
1-Remove ashtray. 2-remove two phillips screws from behind it. 3-remove the trim piece that is heald in by thoes screws, be sure to be gentle with the power connecter (outside left) for cig. lighter power. 4-remove two phillips screws that hold the wood console piece down. 5-lift console wood piece up enough to clear shift gate and push horizintally towards the rear of the vehicle to remove the rear set pin (you wil see what I am talking about after you have it out), be gentle with it. 6-disconnect power switches (or at least hazard switch) so you have more room to work with. 7- Use a 1/4 drive 8mm socket on an extention to remove three bolts holding shift gate from shift base. 8- lift up enough on shift gate to access bolt on bottom of shift lever. 9-use channel locks or crescent wrench to remove loosten bolt. 10-turn shift lever as if it is a large screw (there are threads on the bottom of the shift lever) to remove. Voila, you should have the leaver and shift gate in your hand, instillation is the reverse of these directions. Be sure that all the windows are functioning as well as your hazard lights before sealing the whole thing up.

Thanks very much for the info, it's a bit more complicated than I thought but I was going to try to just unscrew it from the top so I'm really glad you have given me the whole picture.
