Newbie owner: 1982 R107 headlight replacement??
I've just become the proud owner of an 82 380SL. So I may need to adopt a new handle, as I will be hopping between both the SL and the diesel forum.
Of course the car has those yukky US style sealed beam headlights. On my 300SD I was able to find a Bosch H4 halogen replacement light that fitted the standard rectangular headlamp and produces great lighting, without the cost and risk of buying a used Euro light on eBay...... Does anyone make a similar high output replacement light that will fit the Par36 twin headlamp mess on these cars? I have not been able to find anything obvious on most catalogues from Hella, Cibie and so on...... I promise not to keep crowing about how much easier the diesel is to work on than the V8... honest |

Mr. Sokoloff
I have been to and talked to Stern about headlamp replacement. I received a schematic from him that talks about fusing and doing some wire splicing.
I got a little panicked when i looked at the instructions. Could you give me a heads up on what you got from himand what the depth of installation was? Greatly appreciated.

The 5-3/4 round housings are a drop in replacement.
The wiring/fuse issue is only if you choose to use the higher output bulbs. If you stick with the standard 55/60watt bulbs you can just plug and play. I've done both, with 100/130w in euro housings in my 560SEL, and did euros in my 300D with the standard wiring and bulbs. You get 90% of the improvement by sticking with 55/60w bulbs. Jim

I am trying to figure out what to do here - Daniel Stern has been EXTREMELY helpful but the products he sells are extremely expensive - the most basic set of Cibie halogen lights that drop in to a 107 with no mods are the best part of $400 when all is said and done. Even the bulbs are an additional cost!
Given I paid $95 at Canadian Tire for a similar set of Bosch rectangular upgraded lights for my 300SD, this seems a little steep. Performance Products appear to carry a Hella or Bosch set of lights in their catalogue that look like a drop in for about $200 for all four - they only appear in the catalogue, not on the web site. I have to give them a call and discuss it. Right now new tires, shocks and bodywork have more than eaten up the lighting budget. RL |

Stern is not the only source of lights.
He is a vendor of choice if you want to ensure you have a high quality product, and the backup service. Try other options, eBay for example, and see what's out there. Jim
