350 SLC Euro

Some basics, just got a 1979 350SLC (grey) with a 450 in it. This along with the a/c was installed in germany prior to shippment to the states 5 years ago. I previosly owned a 79 SLR so have some familiarity, but I'm rusty.
1 Where is the fuse box?
2 Where is the fuse to the compressor clutch
3 Is there an electrical link between the comp. clutch and the auxillary radiator fan? (The fan doesnt seem to work).
4 What about the consol settings. There are 2 4inch slides on each side of the a/c control consol and the fan speed knob and temp control knob.
Bottem line, I was fooling with the controlls and the a/c quit cooling, the fan works and the louvers work but I cannot get the clutch to engage. Can I test the clutch by direct connection to the battery to see if it will engage?
Thanks for any help.

The fuse box should be on the passenger side kick panel. I will try to look at the fuse box tomorrow to tell you which fuse controls the fan. From what I have read, there could be a variety of reasons the aux fan is not working. Wiring directly to the battery would test it alright.

I just spent about 4 hours degreasing parts for mine today, what fun. I will be dropping the car and engine off at my mechanic in the next few days to have the rebuilt engine put back in. Can't wait to drive it again.

As for A/C controls, I will quote some from the manual.

Rapid cooling:

Turn temperature switch and blower switch clockwise to stop.

Move control levers 2 and 3 (1,2,3 and 4 from left to right), to the "closed" position and levers 6 (above the radio) and 9 (passenger side vent, far right) to position "open".

Close all side windows.

Hope this helps.

Good luck,

Steve

Thanks so much for your info. Look forward to hearing from you re. fan fuse location. I've looked at the kick panel because that was where the box was on my 79 SLR. They must have hidden it better. It is also there on my brothers 560 SLR. Lets see, I think site is the third failure as you age. I'll keep looking.Good luck with your rebuild.

Sorry to take so long to respond. I finally went by the car and checked on it yesterday. The AC fuse is in slot number 9. I figure you have already found it by now though.

Smile My 350 SLC Query

Steve
Thanks again for your info
I did "hot wire" the aux fan. It does work. I think there may be no problem. The car has never gotten hot enough to turn it on. This, unlike my other 79 SL in Phoenix, it ran hot to the point that someone told me that if I could affords that car I could afford another to drive in the summer!!
I also "hot wired" the compressor clutch to the battery. it works and the system cools and responds to the console controls. It narrows down to the freon sensor or some other sensor/control that is in the circuit to the clutch. I'm still looking.
I did find the fuse box where it is supposed to be (duh).
I am looking for amber (read that yellow) lenses for the fog lights. They are not listed as such here or at Performance Products, a Mercedes parts source on the net as www.************************. My brother thinks that the ones on the sedan are the same and they do come in amber.
Thanks again for your help and I look forward to hearing from you.
