1996 sl 320 starting problem

all lights come on when key turned but no power to starter...is this a crankshaft sensor or ignition switch problem..car will start dozens of times then all at once no sart...have to turn key on and off 50 or 60 times to start

Ignition switch is notorious for going bad. Do a forum search "ignition switch". Crankshaft sensor does not, to my knowledge, prevent starter from running. Also, possible issue: nuetral switch, negative battery cable, and just plain old bad starter motor. I'd use a volt meter to check for voltage at the starter motor terminal while someone activates the ignition switch.
