kinder seat

Just bought my first MB - a 560SL 1989... Am interested in a few things...
Am thinking about adding a kinder seat.
Has anyone purchased one & installed it themselves? If so, How hard is it to install? What is the advantage of the folding seat?
thanks
Robin

Your car is beautiful. I was thinking about the kinder seat as well. (I have a 380 SL that I just bought from my father in California.) I am going to try another route first.

I ordered seatbelts from JC Whitney and think I can attach them to the section of the car under the current "seat" - carpet covered plywood. There seems to be a bracket there that is welded onto the body of the car.

I have three children 12,10,9 and they all told me not to waste the money on the seat, but to get the seatbelts instead... I think the seatbelts were about 30 dollars.

I should be getting them in another week.

kinder seat vs. seatbelts

My husband had suggested that same thing.... Let me know if that works- maybe I'll hold off and put my $$ towards a better stereo!!
Thanks

I will let you know. I should be getting them soon. I am wrestling with the choice of what stereo to get also. I would like to stick with something that "fits" with the MB mystique etc.... Like Blaupunkt or becker, but the becker choices are pitiful and the blaupunkt ones are an option. I have been looking for those at Crutchfield. ( I think they have a website) The ones I like the most are the new Sonys. They have motorized reverable faceplates and are very nice. I just have a little trouble putting something that says sony on the dash.

My mother had a 86 300SL with a child seat in the rear...it's a nice feature but it can only be used in combination with very small children or older children without legs. There is just no room in the SL to let someone sit in the rear.
We took out the child seat and put in the normal carpented panel.
Adding the child seat is as simple as can be. We still have the black leather child seat lying on the attick (don't have the car anymore).

My 90 300SL has a child seat as well, but it is just of no use.

greetingz,

Thanks for the compliment! Bungee jumping is definitely worth the trouble of overcoming your fear; it is great...especially at 185m height.

Here is a pic to give you an idea about the thing that is called childseat .

I can see what you mean about real small children or those without legs! There is NO room in the back with the seat there... Thanks for the pic....

I bought the seatbelts from JC Whitney, they cost around 16.00 per pair. There are square brackets that are welded onto the body of the car underneath the platform for it to rest on. You then pass one end of the seatbelt through and then bolt it to the other end of the other seatbelt (it is a sturdy metal plate.) The bolts come with it and outside of the fact that both ends of the seatbelt come up from the back of the bench in one spot - as opposed to an area separated by the width of average hips, they work for my kids fine.

Are they Department of transportation legal...? I kind of doubt it - They make me feel a lot better anyway. And they keep my children from always asking to sit on the back cover for the soft top. I have had no complaints from my children about sitting on the platform (original carpeted plywood), I have a folded quilt there - which can be used to cover up when it gets cold also. I am very happy with my modification. I think If you wanted to you could probably convince someone to bolt the ends of the seatbelts through the floor of the car. I have pictures but they are to high res to attach to this message. I can email if anyone is interested in seeing them.

I sent you four pictures. I had some initial trouble because of a size limit on the mailbox. The pictures are taken with a Nikon that produces pictures that are almost a megabyte each. Let me know if you don't get them all. (I think I'll probably know because they get sent back if over the limit or your mailbox is too full). I will try to resend if they bounce back to me.

Disagree

As these seats were available over here (Switzerland) throughout the reign of the R129, I have them on my R129 500SL. I am 6 feet tall, and often travel with two kids, one in the front passenger seat, and one directly behind. My wife is 5'4" and we can travel short distances (say up to an hour) with me in the passenger seat, pushed forward, and the kids (6 and 8) in the back.

Disappointed that this is not an option on the new model.

Thanks!! My youngest is 11 and small (at this point) & my oldest is 19 and small (5'3"). They probably would have no problems in it, because my seat is always forward, as I'm only 5'6". I think it would probably do for short distances also. What I think I will probably do is install just the seat belts for now. My Mercedes repair shop recommended me to a guy who does custom interior work, so if I want to put the seat in later, he can do it....
