93 sl500 dash lights out..
Well thanks ahead of time for anyhelp with my problem,
Im cleaning up my 1993 sl500 and theres a list of things that I want to do with it, but right now Im looking to get the dash lights working again and odometer... the lights were working and so was the odometer, I push the odometer to reset the trip and now the odometer stoped working... the pass door light that goes when the door opens broke and killed the fuse, got the light back together with new fuse.. works fine now.. but when night came I was ready for a drive and all outside lights work, door lights, raido, but dash lights out.. fuse looked good and put new in just to be sure.. still out... so any ideas on a good place to start looking Thanks again! The VDO's in these cars come in two different versions. Electronic and mechanical. Which do you have? If it's electronic, be more specific about what is not working. Do the odometer numerals light up? If it's mechanical, the gears are known to go bad, especially after pressing the reset.

odometer numeruls do light up, speedometer works fine and lights do work. and as of it being mechanical or electronic how could I find out?? the odometer numeruls are like oldfashion, not like new odometers that are digital.. if that helps....
Thanks LLP |

OK It's mechanical ( the parts which move the old style odometer ).

Would it be something to do it your self or is it just to much work for what its worth??
And if its something you can do. how would I go about getting this project going?? like what gears I would need to get, or any good ideas on how to get to them in the dash and so on... Thanks again for any help LLP |

It's not too difficult to remove the VDO cluster. It is held in place simply by friction. There are no cables to disconnect, as all the wiring is on fixed placement mating "plugs". First lower the steering wheel as far down and rearward as it will go. Disconnect the negative battery cable. ( Avoids any electrical damage or surge ). Remove the driver side knee bolster. Put a towel or rag over the steering column. Through the knee bolster openning, reach behind the VDO and carefully push it out. You don't want to scratch the plastic face. Take it to a speedo shop for repairs. While you have it out, it's not a bad idea to change all the lamps. Do a forum search if you need more details on removal. If you aren't sure of your skills, take the car to a professional shop familiar with MB's.
