380sl automatic transmission - late shifts
I have a 380SL from 1983.
I can use some advice about the automatic transmission. The AT shifts very late into 2nd gear, appr 4000rpm. I have checked the cable from the AT to the acc. levers and it moves, so it is not stuck. Oil and oilfilter are renewed. I have adjusted the vacuum modulator with 2 turns against the clock, but no difference. Maybe I should adjust more? Or is that not the place to adjust. On forums I have read different stories about the place to adjust the timing of the gear (most topics are about dieselengines). The AT does not slip. Thanks for any advice |

Try adjusting the cable coming from the transmission to the throttle linkage. If you loosen just a bit, and I do mean just a bit, it might solve your problem. The modulator from what I understand adjust how hard or how soft the shifts are, and the cable is more for the actual shift points.
Good luck. Glenn |

On the 722.3, the vacuum modulator does not control the shift point....only softness of the shift (not always the case with other transmissions such as the 722.1). The shift point is only adjusted by the bowden cable.
Check you kickdown switch under the accelerator pedal! If it is stuck in the on position, your car will shift very late. Sometimes the carpet or floor mat will cause it to get stuck.
