107 Power Steering Pump?

82 380sl won't hold PS fluid. Serious leak. I've done alot of research on this site and I suspected a failed steering box. Mechanic says PS box and coupler is ok, but the PS PUMP needs resealing/rebuild.
Haven't found many posts re: a failed PS pump...
Thoughts?

where is the fluid leaking, can you see it ?
the box leaks at the box, the pump at the pump
What about the lines in and out?
I have a PS pump I just removed from an 82 380 parts car, so dont stress

So, are you wanting to divest yourself of the PS pump?

If it's a Sperry-Vickers, look at the back, with a mirror, or feel for fluid at the rear bottom. There's a large circular 'plate' that is held in with a large circlip, and an 'O' ring to seal it. The ring leaks. Other probable spot on the pump is the front shaft seal, in behind the pulley. Both are easily fixed with a $20.00 kit.
My pump had a good front seal, but leaked in back. The rear 'O' ring replacement took less than 20 minutes, not counting the 1/2 hour to remove the pump and the 1/2 hour to but it back in.
The PS box is another kettle of fish. Do a search and you'll soon see what's involved there. Dpetrk's article on re-sealing is the seminal work on this job IMO.
